Good news for older adults across Aroostook County — congregate meal programs are now up and running in Fort Kent, Caribou, and Presque Isle, offering healthy meals in welcoming community settings that help folks stay independent, nourished, and connected.

These meals do more than fill stomachs — they strengthen social bonds, improve nutrition, and combat loneliness. As many participants will tell you, it’s not just the food, but the friendly faces, shared laughter, and the feeling of being part of something bigger.

“People come for the food, but they stay for the friendship,” said Deborah Jones, a board member and volunteer with the Agency. “There’s something really healing about gathering around a table, especially for those who live alone or don’t have family nearby. It’s community at its best.”

According to Nutrition Services Manager Jarraid Belanger, lunch menus vary throughout each month and by location. Upcoming entrees include favorites like ravioli, beef pot roast, baked haddock, lasagna, sweet and sour chicken, and beef chili. Menus are posted on the Agency website.

Who Can Attend?

Eligibility is simple:  anyone aged 60 and over who is not currently receiving Meals on Wheels, as well as veterans aged 55 and older, are welcome to participate.  In addition, individuals under 60 may attend when accompanying an eligible person for a $10 fee.

Meals are provided at no cost to eligible participants, though donations are appreciated and help keep the program going strong.

When and Where?

All meals are served promptly at 11:00 AM, and seating is limited, so reservations are required. Call (207) 764-3396 to reserve your spot at one of the following locations:

Efforts are currently underway to expand this program further with two additional sites, one opening Tuesday, June 3rd at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 172 Fox Street, in Madawaska and another later on in the southern region.  Stay tuned for full details!

Can't Make It to a Meal Site?

For those who are unable to attend congregate dining, Easy Meals — healthy frozen entrees available for purchase — are offered at the Agency’s Presque Isle office. Availability and variety change monthly. Meals are $7.00 each. For more information, call (207) 764-3396.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Agency is also looking for friendly volunteers in Caribou and Presque Isle to help with congregate meals. Positions include:

  • Intake Greeters

  • Servers (prep/cooking, serving, and breakdown duties)

Training is provided, and volunteers often say the experience is deeply rewarding.

“If you’re looking for a way to give back and make real connections, this is it,” said Deb Jones. “You don’t just serve a meal — you help someone feel cared for.”

To learn more about helping to support a congregate meal event, contact Halina Herzog, Volunteer Services Manager, at (207) 764-3396.

There’s a place at the table waiting for you. Whether you’re hungry for good food, good company, or both, these meals are a chance to reconnect, recharge, and be part of a pretty terrific community.
